Hey everyone! I have a favor to ask - Our local animal shelter is doing a contest to win $100K. They REALLY need it. They are one of the only shelters in the area and currently does not have the funding it needs to handle the large amount of animals. They are also going to start a trap-neuter-release program which is desperately needed with the amount of stray cats hanging around.
You can vote once a day - they need a legit email to confirm your vote

Please reblog & share with your followers! They were so close to winning a contest a few years ago but came in 2nd place which brought in no money :(

“On June 4, 2011 Remi was shot in front of her house for being a Pit Bull.
She and her sisters had gotten out of the backyard gate some how for a minute, as I was getting the dogs back in I heard our dog Lola, a Cairn Terrier, barking in the front yard. Then I heard a POP and a dog yelping in pain. I called my dogs and they came running to the back gate. Remi our Pit Bull was bleeding profusely. I started screaming realizing she was shot. A man who lives around the corner from us was in my driveway yelling that the “Pit Bull” attacked his wife. I called him a liar saying she would never do such a thing. Then he said ‘The Pit Bull TRIED to attack his wife” I called him on that too. I screamed at him that he shot our dog Just Because She WAS a Pit Bull, and he started saying he was sorry over and over again.
As the 5 Nassau County Police cars pulled up, I was confused as to why they were not disarming this man, and why they were treating me and my son and daughter like criminals. They were harassing us and not aiding in getting care for our dog.
They were trying to make their way into our backyard, not looking for the man who shot our dog, but for our dog! I know NOW that if they would have found Remi, they would have shot her to kill her.
As I was screaming for some kind of assistance against this henious crime, I was informed by one of the police officers that this man was “allowed ” to have a gun. Right there and then I knew he was retired from the force.
I come from a police family. My grandfather was the Chief of Police of the Village of Freeport for approximately 40 years, my uncle followed his footsteps. I know about the law and the officers of the law. I knew right then and there, we would get nothing from the men in blue.
But I was shocked at the way these officers treated me, my children, my boyfriend and my dog. They made it difficult to get my dog treated, they harassed my son and daughter. They frisked my boyfriend after he pulled up at our house. Searching him for a gun, why ? I have no idea. While my son was sobbing on our front stoop, they would not allow Bart to go to his aid, instead detaining him in the driveway as 4 police officers ripped through his pants pockets and wallet.
After they had no evidence of ANY attack or harm to the wife of this madman, they informed me that they contacted Animal Control because Remi had no license.
The bullet used was one of those that shatter on impact.
Aren’t they ILLEGAL? I guess not for a retired police officer.
I am disgusted.
Be careful citizens of Baldwin. You never know if that “couple out for a walk” have CONCEALED LOADED WEAPONS in their pockets ready to take aim on your pets, your children or even YOU.

Fucking humans seriously.
Fucking humans and fucking cops. This is beyond disgusting. My heart hurts. I hope the poor dog makes it through everything okay.
My heart goes out to this poor baby. :( People make me so sick.
She’s just a fucking baby.
I’m actually the one that posted this article - The owner’s daughter is an acquaintance of mine through an online forum. The dog is doing much much better. The owner updates the facebook fairly often. The dog went through surgery and infections for awhile and a lot of therapy. As far as I know, the guy who shot her didn’t suffer at all and *i believe* he tried to sue or threatened to sue because they made a facebook asking for help/donations even though she refused to give his name to the public.
You can check out their facebook HERE

^ Updated pic of Remi after one of her surgeries.
I’m happy to see this still floating around tumblr and getting a lot of good comments supporting pits!
“It’s a real massacre in every sense of the word. I saw bodies of women and children lying on roads beheaded. It’s horrible and inhuman. It was a long night helping people get to hospitals.” - Abu Jihad, Khalidiya resident
“We are not getting any help, there are no ambulances or anything. We are removing the people with our own hands. […] We have dug out at least 100 bodies so far, they are placed in the two mosques.” - anonymous Syrian activist
“We were sitting inside our house when we started hearing the shelling. We felt shells were falling on our heads.” - Waleed, Khalidiya resident
“It does not seem that they get it. Even if they kill 10 million of us, the people will not stop until we topple him.” - anonymous Syrian resident
As many as 260 people have been killed since Friday across Homs, Syria, according to several opposition groups, marking the deadliest day of violence since anti-government protests began in mid-March.
The UN Security Council will meet Saturday morning to vote on a resolution condemning the Syrian government’s violent response to the ongoing protests.
Multiple Syrian embassies across Europe and the Middle East were attacked by demonstrators Friday and Saturday to protest the recent assault on anti-Assad activists in Syria.
This month marks the 30th anniversary of the massacre in Hama, Syria. In February 1982, President Hafez Assad, Bashar Assad’s father, attempted to crush a rebellion by shelling the city of Hama and bulldozing homes across the neighborhood. An estimated 20,000 people were killed over three weeks.

Carriage Horse Dies in NYC Street.
Concerned New York residents are calling for an investigation after a carriage horse knelt down and died in the middle of a busy Manhattan street on Sunday.
En route the Central Park near 54th and 8th Ave, a large white horse used by the NYC carriage industry knelt down and died in the middle of the road. The law enforcement unit of the New York ASPCA is one of the groups calling for an investigation telling the New York Daily News, “The ASPCA has long believed that carriage horses were never meant to live and work in today’s urban setting.” A no brainier for anyone who knows anything about horses but still the industry persists.
Horses in the NYC carriage industry are forced to work nine hours a day in almost every weather condition. They spend their entire lives pounding sensitive hooves on hard pavement while they navigate some of the most reckless and dangerous traffic conditions. At the end of their lives, when they’ve been worked to exhaustion, many are sold to slaughterhouses where they are butchered and sold for meat.
Being carriage horse is no walk in the park. If they don’t die the streets, these gentle and caring horses are worked to the brink of death and slaughtered all in an effort to turn a quick buck for their owner. This poor horse’s death underscores the need for a ban on the industry.
Enough is enough, end the use of carriage horses now.

For the past 14 years, my mother has been cleaning houses for a living. I still remember the first time I cleaned a stranger’s house with her. I was in charged of the bathrooms. I hated it.
I would sit on the side of the bath tub and look at the cleaning supplies in front of me. Ajax. Windex. Clorox. Dr. Clean. That shiny bald head always looking back at me.
“You’re doing it all wrong mijo,” my mother would say. She would kneel down next to me and show me the proper way to apply the Ajax on the walls. Most of the time, my mind was some place else. “Did you get that?” she’d ask. I’d just nod my head yes.
She would quickly get up and run back to the kitchen. Or throw a new load of the stranger’s laundry. Or do their beds. Or kneel back again and clean under the couches. Always moving quickly. Quicker than me. Not once complaining.
“Even if you see 5 cents or five dollars, you are not to take a single penny,” she’d tell me over our lunch break. “We might be poor, but we don’t steal.”
Every time I aced a test, she would brag to her bosses in her broken English. I would thank them for congratulating me and go back outside to clean their patio.
I can’t ever thank that woman enough for making me the man I am now.
