reblogged from quarrygirl:

(as always, click the photos to enlarge and see captions.)

i hit up natural products expo west for a couple hours today and had a blast! i didn’t get to see everything, not even close—-talk about vegan overload!—-but i did sample some great new and classic products. most exciting were the little gardein sliders i posted about earlier, the temptation soft serve machine at the chicago vegan foods booth, and some insane new flavored vegenaise varieties from follow your heart. (i’m talking horseradish and tartar sauce!) mind blowing. ALSO, austin-based queso makers food for lovers (one of my favorite brands ever) has come out with a new killer chipotle mayo and will soon be releasing a fat free country gravy. already having fantasies about that. if the gravy is half as good as the queso, i know i’ll be adding it to practically every meal.

one booth i didn’t make it to today, and i’m so bummed, is eat pastry. they make fantastic vegan cookie dough and have recently sent me samples of their new sugar cookie flavor. outta this world.

i know this isn’t as in depth as my previous expo west coverage, but i thought you all would enjoy a few snaps.

Pesto Chicken Pizza with Creamy Garlic Sauce & A VEGAN JUNK FOOD COOKBOOK GIVEAWAY!

veganpizzafuckyeah:

People! Allow me to introduce you to my new favorite cookbook, Vegan Junk Food by Lane Gold!

Jalapeno Bacon Poppers. Boston Cream Pie. Butterfinger Chunk Cookies. Spring Rolls. Beer Brat-Stuffed Portabello Mushrooms with Steak Fries. Mocha Cheesecake Brownies. Mac and Cheese Bake. Tortilla Chip Soup. Sweet or savory, from appetizers to desserts, this cookbook has got it all!

INCLUDING AN ENTIRE CHAPTER DEDICATED TO PIZZAS AND BREADS! You heard me right, folks! Baked Ziti Pizza. Spicy Onion and Sausage Pizza. Eggplant Parmesan Pizza. Deep Dish Hawaiian Pizza. Rosemary Garlic Potato Pizza. Barbecued Tempeh Pizza. Pizza Dough Garlic Rolls. Pizza Rolls. Do it yourself Vegan Ricotta and Cheese Sauce. AND MORE! Behold the culinary wonders of Vegan Junk Food.

When I saw the pizza & bread chapter, I knew I had to hit Adams Media up for a review copy, and they were nice enough to comply. Though Vegan Junk Food was released in mid-December, and I first contacted the publisher way back in November, it wasn’t until late January that I received my copy. The book’s been so popular, you see, that the first run sold out. Yay vegan junk food!

I haven’t had time to try out many of the recipes yet, but this past weekend the husband and I made the Pesto Chicken Pizza with Creamy Garlic Sauce. A.MAZE.A.BALLS!, y’all! The garlic sauce - actually pureed white beans - tastes like garlicky mashed potatoes. I could seriously eat it as its own meal, it’s so yummy.

All of the recipes look so delish that we had trouble choosing just one, but our lack of ingredients helped to narrow it down. (Seriously, we were short of one or two ingredients for nearly every pizza recipe. THE LUCK.) The Black Bean Taco, Thai, and Meatball pizzas are next up on our list!

The good news for you: Adams Media sent me three copies of Vegan Junk Food, so I have two to give away!

To enter to win, REBLOG THIS POST and describe your favorite VEGAN JUNK FOOD in the notes/comments. Can’t pick just one? Reblog multiple times (always with a different answer) for additional entries (but please, don’t be obnoxious about it. No spamming!) Likes are nice but don’t count.

The contest is open until Monday, February 27 at 4PM CST. I’ll choose one winner randomly and the second winner will be whichever entry most strikes my fancy. I love ALL the vegan junk foods, so don’t feel like you have to suck up by answering “pizza”!

Since I’m shipping these myself, the contest is open internationally. Remember to leave your ask box open so I have a way of contacting you. Once I announce the results, the winners have 72 hours to respond, after which time I’ll choose another winner. Good luck!

And…GO!

oh my god i cant pick….

tacos. vegan tacos. i eat that shit allllllll the time

SHIT VEGANS NEVER SAY:

  • Avocados Suck!
  • You know... I really miss meat...
  • Tofu? What's that?
  • Earthlings? I was cracking up during that whole movie!
  • PETA? Isn't that like a bread? Oh it's an organization? I'm not familiar with them.
  • The only reason I am vegan is to lose weight. Otherwise I'd totally eat animal products again.
  • Almond Milk is overrated.
  • How could cosmetics not be Vegan?
  • Cooked Meat in the Sauce? Don't worry, I'll pick the meat out of it, I don't mind.
  • Oh, you by accident sprinkled cheese on my pasta. NBD.
  • PETA is a flawless organization.
  • Vegan, Vegetarian...Same thing!
  • It's winter, better pull out my UGG boots!

get your healthy ingredients…FOR CHEAP!

A lot of times people tell me they can’t afford to eat healthy, or buy the things that will make their healthy food taste better without spending a lot of money. I refuse to believe this is true, because good bargains are out there but you simply have to look for them. I take extreme pleasure in finding awesome stuff for cheap prices. Who doesn’t? Let’s take for example my trip to Costco last night.

  • Cinnamon. You can buy a dinky McCormick 2.37 oz bottle for this price, or you can get a whopping 10.7 oz for $2.65!! Holy sh*t!! Is this even real? Maybe this is partially the reason why I use so much cinnamon. But really, it’s a great way to flavor your healthy desserts/sweet flavored foods. Sure, it’s a lot but..still.
  • Vanilla extract. This one blows my mind. McCormick 2oz of vanilla extract from Wal-Mart online costs $4.12. For 16 oz at Costco, you can get real vanilla extract for only $6.75! I don’t think I need to do the math. Vanilla is another great flavoring for your oatmeal, yogurt, baked goods, etc. Don’t get cheated.
  • Almond butter. Another no brainer. This one is the best. Walmart says Maranatha almond butter is $4.12 for 2 measley oz. I think not! Costco: 26 whopping oz. for only $5.99. Is this even real???

Look harder, my friends. And you will find great things. Be smart! Calculate prices by the price/oz or price/weight. Do the work in the beginning so that you can be a smarter shopper. For example, I wanted to try steel-cut oats but found they were ridiculously expensive for oats that are LESS processed than your normal rolled/instant. So I checked out my grocery store’s bulk bins (where they sell candy, nuts, dried fruit) and found that they sold steel-cut oats for HALF the price of Red Mill brand or whatever. I’m even willing to bet, if I felt like it, I could go talk to the owner of some horse stable/farm and see where they get their oats from in bulk. That’s a little much, but where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Happy bargain-hunting!

costco and sams club also sells a huge box of boca burgers (i think 14 or 16 burgers) for $9.99!!

Vegan Skinny Bitch: Silk Soy Products - a moral inquiry. →

veganskinnybitch:

thethriftyvegan:

veganskinnybitch:

So, it’s not secret I love Silk products. My campus sells cartons of Silk soy milk (vanilla and original), and it’s what we use in our cafe. It’s the brand both my jobs use - Boloco in their soy berry smoothie, and Pejamajo Cafe for it’s espresso-based beverages. Whenever I have an extra $2.99…

This comes up on conversation a lot in my circle. I will start off by expressing my understanding that a lot of vegans (and others who buy dairy-free alternatives) have minimal access to the plethora of brands available to some of us. So if your options are to either drink dairy or drink Silk, then by all means, drink Silk.

I do not consider myself militant in the least. I have a very broad and open mind of what being vegan means, as well as a good understanding of how one comes to being the best vegan they can be. I feel like we are all on our journey and we are all doing the very best we can each and every day. And I wouldn’t begrudge someone for purchasing Silk because it’s not my place to police “how vegan” someone is.

I can only speak to my reasons behind why I elected to stop buying Silk products. Actually, at this time I don’t consume any soy milks or yogurts (it’s Almond and Coconut all the way for me) so this hasn’t even been on my mind in quite a while. But several years ago when I was buying primarily Silk, and before I knew it was owned by a Dairy (which is actually Dean Foods) I moved to California (the largest dairy producing state in the US) and ended up near two dairy facilities owned by that company.

I could go into gruesome details of what I’ve witnessed at those facilities, but I won’t do that in this post - we all know the horrors of the dairy industry, I don’t need to repeat them. What I will say is this… when I drove past one of those facilities day in and day out and had to bear witness to teeny calves, tied to trees with no water, no mother, no protection from the elements and being powerless to do anything about it, I thought I would die. It’s hard enough knowing it goes on in the world, but having to see those beings that I care about, day in and day out, suffer such horrible acts against them…. I can’t even put these thoughts into clear words because those babies, and my inability to save them, haunt me so much.

My point is, when I came to realize that Silk and these dairies were owned by the same parent company, it hurt my soul to think that the money I was paying for my Soy Nog (my then favorite Silk product) could in anyway be helping to fund the cruelty against these calves and their mothers. I couldn’t bear the thought of having any of my money be used to help fund what I was seeing.. dehydrated babies, tied to trees with no care in the world or consideration given to them. That experience broke me in so many ways. And the only thing I could do (apart from local activists trying to get them at least some water bowls and shade) was to stop buying Silk Products.

(And just to point out, the sad reality is, the treatment of these calves is perfectly legal.)

Was this a personal decision? Yes. Is it one I expect from each and every vegan or dairy alternative drinker? No. So please don’t misunderstand, I will not look down on any vegan for their vegan purchases. I am here just trying to be the best vegan I can be, just like all of us. And there is no magical vegan box to put each of us in.

We are the best vegans we can be, no matter where we fall on the vegan line, simply because we care enough to not look the other way. I think veganskinnybitch is right in her practice to support dairy alternatives so that companies will make more of them. And hey, maybe one day they will go to dairy-free products only. Thank you VSB for this insightful post.

Like I said before, we are all on our journey together. This is just a little insight into mine.

I really respect this post and your experience and your attitude. It’s really refreshing - not the story, but everything else. I think these are moral questions that grip us daily as it’s hard to always know definitively what to do. It eats me up inside. Thank you for the response.

vegansaurus!: Sneak preview: The Vegg!!! →

I don’t even know where to start with this, but I need it. I miss fried eggs, for real—the way I could mop up the still-liquid part of the yolk with my toast and cover the whites with pepper. Sorry for grossing you out.

For the past six years I’ve been hurting for a fried egg substitute. I’m gonna give you more info as soon as I get it, but the world needs to know about this sooner rather than later. You should sign up and like that shit on Facebook and donate (at press time, they had only raised $2,080 of an $8,000 goal toward the Vegg’s patent) in order to convince the Vegg people to move it along now.

I will serve this shit up with the vegan waffles I made today and some freakin’ smoky tempeh strips, or perhaps make Veggs-in-a-frame and start a vegan brunch cafe and have the most friends ever. What do you think?

HOLY SHIT I think I just had a tiny orgasm! Rich people, please give these nice folks all your money so we can have vegan fried eggs for our breakfast pizzas! Glorious, glorious breakfast pizzas topped with fried veggs, hash browns, cheddar cheese, Smart Links, Canadian ham (the kind that didn’t have a mom, duh!), and fakin’ bacon’. (Like this, only AWESOME!) Stacked three high, cause that’s how breakfast-slash-brunch works!

P.S. Vegg, I don’t suppose you need a tester? CALL ME!

make it happen yall
